The Charleston Symphony Orchestra League will celebrate their 35th year by having another Designer Showhouse. This year it is located at 73 Rutledge Avenue. This event raises money for the Charleston Symphony as do all our events, but, it is the one event that requires all of us as League members to participate.
This is a truly remarkable house located in the heart of Harleston Village on the corner of Rutledge Avenue and Wentworth Street. Elizabeth Corbett, who built the house next door inherited the lot in 1831. That lot was then inherited by William Whilden who built the house in 1856. The Manson family owned it and lived in the house during the Civil War.
In 1893 the clothier, Issac W. Hirsch bought the house and hired the firm of Abrahams and Seyle to remodel the house which resulted in largely rebuilding it. Today it remains largely intact as completed in the 1890’s in the Empire style with a mansard roof of fish scale shingles. The house is finished in natural stucco with a red joint…and, is still referred to as the Whilden-Hirsch house.
The house will be designed by ASID Carolinas which will include both North and South Carolina Interior Designers.
