Arts Advocacy

Do you want to have an impact on Arts Funding, both in South Carolina and across the nation? If you do, you will be interested in the activities of the CSOL®’s Arts Advocacy Committee.

We work with our legislators—state and national—to promote arts legislation and the funding of arts activities. Throughout the year, we follow proposed legislation, budget requests and funding levels. We give legislators our viewpoints on the importance of the arts and the necessity of funding the arts throughout South Carolina and the nation.

At the state level, we work with the South Carolina Arts Commission. We also work with the South Carolina Arts Alliance that serves the arts through advocacy, technical assistance, and leadership development in South Carolina. Each year SCAA sponsors Arts Advocacy Day in Columbia in early February. Learn more about Legislative Day and the SC Arts Alliance at www.scartsalliance.net. Members of the CSOL® and the CSOL® Advocacy Committee travel to Columbia to tell our senators and representatives how the arts impact students’ success in education and also to tell them how the arts enrich our lives and communities. An analysis of economic activity reveals that the arts have more than a $1.9 billion impact on our economy.

On the national level, we work with Americans for the Arts which sponsors Arts and Humanities Month each October with nationwide celebrations and events promoting appreciation for the arts. Americans for the Arts also sponsors National Arts Advocacy Day each year.
